Rainscreen Cladding involves the installation of a secondary skin of cladding with a ventilated and drained cavity to a new or existing building façade. The system is like a double wall construction that uses the rainscreen outer layer to keep out the rain and an inner layer to provide the structural body of the building preventing excessive air leakage, to provide the structural and wind loading requirements. The outer layer is designed to breathe like a skin while the inner layer reduces energy loss. The structural frame of the building is kept absolutely dry, as water never reaches it or its thermal insulation within. Evaporation and drainage within the rainscreen cavity removes any water that penetrates between panel joints into the cavity. Water droplets are not driven through the panel joints or openings because the rainscreen principle means that wind pressure and temperature acting on the outer face of the panel is equalised within the cavity. Therefore, there is no significant pressure differential to drive the rain through joints. During extreme weather however, a minimal amount of water may penetrate the outer cladding into the rainscreen cavity. This, however, will drain as droplets down the back of the cladding panel and be dissipated at the base of the system or at the heads of any openings through evaporation and drainage from ventilated mesh closure flashings.
